Why does the SP-404MKII say “Protected!” when I try to edit or delete a pad?

Turn off bank protect

If you’re seeing a “Protected!” message on the SP-404MKII, it usually means Bank Protect is turned on for the bank you’re working in.

When Bank Protect is active, the SP-404MKII will not let you copy, edit, overwrite, or delete any pads in that bank. That includes samples and patterns.

Nothing is broken. The bank is just locked.

Here’s how to fix it.

How to turn off Bank Protect on the SP-404MKII

  1. Find the bank that contains the pad you want to edit.
  2. Press the matching Bank [A/F] – [E/J] button.
  3. If the pad is in Banks F – J, press the bank button again until it starts blinking.
  4. Hold [SHIFT].
  5. Press [COPY].
  6. When the protect confirmation screen shows up, turn the [VALUE] knob until it says “OK”.
  7. Press the [VALUE] knob to confirm.

Once you do that, the bank is unlocked and you can edit or delete pads like normal.

Why the SP-404MKII shows the “Protected!” message

The SP-404MKII has a Bank Protect feature that locks data so it can’t be changed by accident.

This is especially useful for live sets. You don’t want to overwrite a drum hit or pattern mid-performance.

One thing to keep in mind:

Bank Protect works one bank at a time.
And when it’s on, it locks all 16 pads in that bank at once.

Because of that, any action that changes memory gets blocked. That’s why the SP-404MKII throws the “Protected!” error when you try to edit, copy, or delete something.

Common mistakes that cause confusion

Editing the wrong bank
Make sure the bank you unlocked is the same one showing the error.

Looking for pad-level protection
There is no way to protect just one pad. It’s always the whole bank.

Thinking samples and patterns are separate
Bank Protect locks both samples and patterns together. You can’t unlock one without the other.

Missing the blinking bank light
If the bank button is blinking, you’re on Banks F – J. Make sure you’re on the correct layer before turning protection off.

Quick reminder

If the SP-404MKII says “Protected!”, hold [SHIFT] + [COPY], choose “OK” with the [VALUE] knob, and confirm.

That turns off Bank Protect for the current bank so you can edit, copy, or delete pads again.

And that’s it!
